Description
WW2 German NSDAP Enamel Party Badge – RZM M1/44, C. Dinsel, Berlin-Waidmannslust This is an original World War II–era Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP) membership badge, the standard insignia worn by members of the German National Socialist Workers’ Party to publicly display political allegiance. Constructed in die-struck brass with high-quality enamel, the obverse features the black swastika within a white field, surrounded by a translucent red enamel ring bearing the inscription NATIONAL-SOZIALISTISCHE-D.A.P.in gilt lettering. The reverse is fitted with the correct horizontal pin-back fastening and is clearly stamped with the RZMlogo inside a circle, along with the manufacturer code M1/44 — identifying production by C. Dinsel, Berlin-Waidmannslust, a documented wartime maker of political insignia. The NSDAP membership badge originated in the early 1920s during the party’s formative years, with early variants worn by Adolf Hitler and the first generation of party members. After the party’s rise to power in 1933, production was brought under the strict supervision of the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM), the Nazi Party’s central authority for uniforms, insignia, and equipment. The RZM not only standardized design and quality but also assigned each authorized manufacturer a unique M1 code for metal insignia production. The M1/44 code was allotted to C. Dinsel, a Berlin-based manufacturer known for producing both political and paramilitary badges. Membership badges were issued to all accepted party members and were required to be worn on civilian attire as a visible declaration of loyalty. Regulations specified precise dimensions (approximately 24mm diameter), materials, and construction methods to ensure uniformity across the millions of badges produced during the Third Reich. Despite the mass production, subtle differences in maker style, enamel tone, and pin construction allow collectors to identify specific manufacturers and production periods. By the outbreak of WW2, the badge had become an instantly recognizable symbol of party authority and presence, worn by figures ranging from local cell leaders (Zellenleiter) and district officials (Kreisleiter) to senior government functionaries. This example, with its finely executed enamel and fully legible markings, is a textbook mid-war production piece. The translucent red enamel — a hallmark of quality RZM-approved manufacture — remains vibrant, while the reverse retains its original period patina. Today, authentic NSDAP membership badges serve as important historical artifacts, offering direct physical evidence of the political machinery that underpinned the German state during the Third Reich. Collectors prize examples like this for their combination of condition, documented maker, and compliance with period specifications, all of which make it an excellent reference piece for study and display.
