This is an original World War II-era US Army airborne parachutist background trimming—commonly known as a "jump oval"—representing the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (508th PIR), part of the legendary 82nd Airborne Division. The oval consists of a black center field bordered in silver-white thread, designed to be worn behind the Parachutist Badge on the dress uniform.

This example is hand-embroidered on black wool with a metallic silver border, backed by a stiffened mesh support structure consistent with wartime manufacture. It remains in very good condition, showing only light handling wear and no major fraying. The reverse features a tight bullion mesh indicative of early handmade examples, likely theater-made or from a limited stateside run.

The 508th PIR was activated in 1942 and saw extensive combat in Europe, including participation in D-Day (landing near Sainte-Mère-Église), Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. It was one of the few independent parachute infantry regiments attached to the 82nd Airborne, and its paratroopers earned a fierce reputation for tenacity and courage. Jump ovals like this were worn with pride and often customized within units, making surviving originals an important link to airborne history.

This is an excellent and scarce piece of original WWII airborne insignia, ideal for collectors of elite unit memorabilia or paratrooper history.
