This is an original Kriegsdenkmünze für die Feldzüge 1870–71 (War Commemorative Medal for the Campaigns of 1870–71), awarded by the newly formed German Empire to commemorate victory in the Franco-Prussian War. What distinguishes this example is the deeply significant rim engraving: AUS EROBERTEM GESCHÜTZ—“From Captured Cannon.” This inscription confirms the medal was struck from the bronze of seized French artillery, a symbolic act of martial triumph and political unification.

These early, cannon-cast issues were not only commemorative decorations—they were physical embodiments of German military dominance over the Second French Empire. The use of enemy cannon metal was a deliberate statement of conquest, transforming French war materiel into instruments of German statecraft. Such rim-engraved examples are widely considered more desirable among collectors and historians for their direct material link to the battlefield.

The obverse features the dates 1870–1871 set within a radiant starburst, encircled by a laurel wreath and topped by the Kaiserkrone (Imperial Crown), symbolizing the new German imperial identity forged in war. The reverse bears the inscription Für Sieg im Kriege (“For Victory in War”) flanked by crossed swords and encircled by an oak wreath—a traditional symbol of honor and martial strength. The medal retains its original trifold ribbon in black, white, and red—the national colors of the Norddeutscher Bund and later the Deutsches Kaiserreich.

This war marked the collapse of the Second French Empire and the rise of a unified German Empire under Prussian leadership. Following decisive victories at Sedan and Metz, and the dramatic Siege of Paris, Wilhelm I was crowned German Emperor at the Palace of Versailles in January 1871. The symbolic power of this medal—especially examples like this one, struck from enemy cannon—represents not just victory, but the consolidation of German national identity and imperial ambition.
