Civil War Relic .58 Caliber Three-Groove Minié Ball – Recovered from the Battle of Fredericksburg
This is an authentic Civil War-era .58 caliber three-groove Minié ball, recovered from the site of the Battle of Fredericksburg in Virginia. This lead bullet, a standard ammunition type for Union and Confederate forces, shows the distinct rifling grooves from a muzzle-loading rifled musket. The bullet is in well-preserved condition, with a weathered patina reflecting its age and exposure.
The Minié ball, measuring approximately 1 inch in length, was a revolutionary ammunition design that improved accuracy and range, making the Civil War one of the deadliest conflicts of its time. This relic comes from one of the most iconic battles of the war, providing a tangible connection to the soldiers who fought at Fredericksburg in 1862.
Historical Context:
The three-groove Minié ball, like this one, was commonly used in .58 caliber rifled muskets such as the Springfield Model 1861 and the Enfield Pattern 1853. The bullet’s innovative design allowed it to expand upon firing, engaging the rifling grooves of the musket for greater range and accuracy. This advancement made rifles more effective at longer distances, contributing to the high casualty rates of the Civil War.
The Battle of Fredericksburg, fought from December 11–15, 1862, was one of the war’s most significant and devastating engagements. Union forces, under General Ambrose Burnside, suffered a major defeat attempting to dislodge Confederate troops entrenched on Marye’s Heights. Artifacts like this Minié ball serve as a reminder of the brutal combat that took place.
This bullet, recovered from the battlefield, is an extraordinary relic for collectors of Civil War artifacts, historians, or anyone interested in battlefield relics and their powerful connections to history.
