Description
The 1945-D Mercury Dime was struck at the Denver Mint during the final year of World War II, marking the end of both an era in American coin design and a global conflict that defined a generation. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, the coin belongs to the acclaimed Winged Liberty Head series, popularly known as the “Mercury Dime,” which ran from 1916 to 1945. The obverse features Liberty wearing a winged cap, symbolizing freedom of thought, with the inscription “LIBERTY”arcing across the top and “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the date “1945” at the lower rim. The “D” mintmark, denoting Denver, appears on the reverse to the left of the base of the fasces. The reverse bears one of the most symbolic designs in American coinage: a Roman fasces—a bundle of rods bound with an axe—representing unity and authority, combined with an olive branch, signifying peace. This dual imagery spoke directly to America’s role in the war: a nation asserting strength while striving for peace. The surrounding inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DIME”, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” With over 40 million minted in Denver alone, the 1945-D issue is common in circulated grades but holds special significance as the last year of the Mercury dime series. It would soon be replaced by the Roosevelt dime in 1946, honoring the recently deceased president. The 1945-D Mercury Dime stands today as both a wartime relic and a final chapter in one of the most artistically admired series in U.S. numismatic history.
