This is a scarce and elegant example of an Imperial German Model 1870 Mauser parade bayonet, manufactured by the respected Solingen bladesmith Friedrich Pack, and richly embellished with floral etching along the blade’s fuller. Originally designed to fit the M1871 Mauser rifle, this bayonet reflects the pride, martial tradition, and pageantry of Germany’s newly unified empire during and after the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871).

The bayonet features a bright nickel-plated brass hilt with a curved crossguard and stylized bird’s-head pommel, a configuration typical of ceremonial models made for dress and parade use. The ribbed grip remains tightly fitted and complete, showing honest age and wear. The crossguard is stamped with the maker’s name: “FRIEDR. PACK / SOLINGEN / LANDAU (PFALZ)”, referencing both the Solingen blade center and the firm's regional outlet in Landau, a garrison town in the Palatinate. The ricasso and blade spine retain faint but visible floral etching—an ornate touch reserved for parade bayonets and presentation pieces. A red felt buffer pad remains intact at the base of the blade.

The bayonet comes complete with its original black leather scabbard, fitted with brass throat and tip, both showing uniform age toning. The scabbard is in solid condition with surface wear but no structural issues, and the fit remains snug.

The M1870/71 series bayonets were first adopted by the various German states following the unification of the Empire under Prussian leadership. The Franco-Prussian War was the first major conflict in which the Mauser rifle system was deployed en masse, and it played a decisive role in the defeat of French forces and the subsequent proclamation of the German Empire in 1871 at Versailles. While this bayonet would not have been a frontline combat weapon, parade examples like this were worn proudly by guards, garrison troops, and veterans in ceremonial functions well into the early 20th century.
