The AEF operated under French command in this sector, coordinating closely in one of the most complex multi-national operations of the war.

MEUSE–ARGONNE (September 26 – November 11, 1918):
The largest and bloodiest campaign in American military history at that time, Meuse–Argonne involved over 1.2 million US troops and resulted in more than 26,000 American deaths. This final Allied offensive helped break the Hindenburg Line and forced Germany to seek an armistice. Intense fighting took place in dense forests, rugged terrain, and entrenched positions, with the 77th, 28th, and 82nd Divisions among those facing brutal resistance. The heroics of men like Sergeant Alvin York and the “Lost Battalion” occurred during this campaign.

DEFENSIVE SECTOR (Any dates of frontline service):
This clasp acknowledges combat service in designated quiet or holding sectors of the Western Front, where American forces were rotated in for exposure to trench warfare before major offensives. While these zones were not always as active as named campaigns, they still involved risk of enemy artillery, gas attacks, raids, and daily attrition.

The rainbow-colored ribbon represents the unity of the Allied nations, and the medal itself bears the image of a winged Victory, reminiscent of classical Greek depictions of Nike, symbolizing triumph and peace after a war that had devastated Europe.
