This is an original World War II Belgian Prisoner of War Medal (Médaille du Prisonnier de Guerre 1940–1945), instituted by royal decree on October 20, 1947, to honor Belgian soldiers who were taken as prisoners of war by German forces between 1940 and 1945. The medal features a somber yet dignified design: a bronze cross with rays extending between the arms, bearing a central medallion with a barbed wire motif—symbolizing captivity—and the Belgian lion defiantly poised within.

The decoration was awarded to members of the Belgian Armed Forces who endured imprisonment in enemy camps following the German invasion of Belgium on May 10, 1940. In just 18 days, Belgium was forced to capitulate, and over 225,000 Belgian soldiers were taken prisoner and sent to POW camps throughout the German Reich. Many endured harsh conditions in Stalags, Oflags, and labor detachments, especially during the early years of the war.

The reverse typically reads “1940–1945”, and the attached ribbon displays vertical black, yellow, and red stripes—the national colors of Belgium—representing loyalty and perseverance during captivity. This award was not only a mark of military service but also a tribute to the suffering and resilience of those who survived years of internment under the Nazi regime.
